TV Picture but No Sound? Check These 6 Things Before Assuming It’s Broken

Start with the remote, not the back of the TV

The television picture is on, but no sound is coming through.

Before moving furniture, unplugging equipment, or assuming the television needs repair, begin with the simplest visible checks.

This guide is limited to basic first steps.

It does not diagnose hearing issues or provide repair instructions.

Check whether mute is on

Press the mute button once and watch the screen.

Many televisions show a mute symbol or a volume indicator.

If nothing changes, press the volume-up button a few times.

Sometimes the sound was lowered gradually and the television is not actually muted.

Look at the volume number

Check whether the volume number appears when the remote button is pressed.

If the number changes, the remote and television may still be communicating.

If the number does not appear, check whether the remote is pointed toward the television and whether another remote is normally used for sound.

Do not open or repair the remote.

This step is only about identifying which control is active.

Check the selected sound output

Some televisions send sound to another device.

The screen may be set to use:

  • TV speakers
  • a soundbar
  • a receiver
  • headphones
  • a connected streaming device

If the television was previously connected to another sound device, the audio may still be directed there.

Use the normal settings menu only if it is familiar and easy to access.

Avoid changing several settings at once.

Check whether another device has sound

If the television uses a cable box, streaming device, or other connected equipment, try a different channel or app.

This can help distinguish between one silent program and a broader sound issue.

Do not make account, subscription, or service changes based only on one silent screen.

Look for loose visible connections

Without moving the television or opening equipment, check whether a visible soundbar or external device appears powered on.

A cable may have been bumped during cleaning.

Do not force a connector or reach into an unsafe space.

If equipment is difficult to access, stop at the simple checks.

Return settings to the familiar option

If a sound-output menu was changed accidentally, return it to the option normally used in the home.

For many households, that may be TV speakers.

For others, it may be the soundbar.

The correct option depends on the existing setup.

Know when the first check is finished

The first check is complete after confirming:

  • mute status
  • volume level
  • active remote
  • familiar sound output
  • another channel or app
  • visible external device power

If sound does not return, the issue may need further help.
